Middle Level Mathematics Endorsement

Washington State University's Middle Level Math Endorsement program is designed for new (including teacher candidates) and experienced teachers who wish to add an additional endorsement or expertise in middle level mathematics to their current certificate.

Courses for this add-on endorsement will be available in Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver through videoconference (AMS) and face-to-face courses. Teacher candidates should consult with their advisor for program application information and complete their first "block" of education courses prior to enrolling in T&L 426 ad 427.

Prerequisites

  • Math 106 College Algebra (or appropriate math placement score) *
  • Math 252 Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers II (or an endorsement in elementary education)

All prerequisites must be completed with a "C" or better.

* WSU will only consider placement scores less than a year old. If candidates place into Calculus, they are not required to complete Math 106 prior to enrolling in any Math courses outlined in the Middle Level Mathematics endorsement.

  • Math 151 Calculus for Middle School Teachers
  • Math 303 Higher Geometry
  • Math 351 Algebraic Thinking for Middle School Teachers
  • T&L 426 Middle Level Mathematics Methods
  • T&L 427 Proportional Reasoning

The following courses are recommended to strengthen the candidate's mathematical background.

Discrete Math

  • Math 216 Discrete Structure or
  • Math 325 Elementary Combinatorics

Probability and Statistics

  • Math 205 Statistical Thinking or
  • Math 212 Intro to Statistical Methods

Teaching at the Middle School

  • T&L 513 Seminar in Middle School Education
